He is not just a vocalist, but also a performer who designs his own stage costumes.

His musical development began during his childhood in Odesa, Ukraine. At age five, his grandfather taught him to play the accordion. Vitas was a prolific songwriter from a very young age. He claimed to have composed at least 1,000 songs by the time he was 12. He also attended an art school starting at age seven. During his teenage years, he gained experience by appearing in various theatrical productions. This early training in both music and acting shaped his future career.

Before achieving global fame, Vitas lived a life of significant struggle. After being rejected from a musical college, he worked in night clubs to survive. He performed as a Michael Jackson tribute act and a comedian. He even performed magic tricks, such as spoon bending, to entertain crowds. To support himself and his future wife, Svetlana, he worked various jobs. These included selling leftover bread from stores and working as a photographer. He eventually moved from Odesa to Moscow to pursue professional music opportunities.

His professional breakthrough occurred through the help of producer Sergey Pudovkin. Pudovkin discovered Vitas while he was performing in an experimental theatre. This partnership led to the release of his debut album, Philosophy of Miracle, in 2001. The album featured the song "Opera #2," which became a massive success. The music video for this song was highly unusual and creative. In the video, Vitas played an eccentric man with fish gills living in a bathtub.

This imagery led the media to compare him to the character Ichthyander from the novel Amphibian Man.

Throughout the early 2000s, Vitas expanded his reach through various tours and collaborations. He released the album "The Songs of My Mother" in 2003 to honor his late mother. This era saw him performing in many different venues, including stadiums and casinos. He also collaborated with the famous Italian composer Lucio Dalla. In 2006, he performed at "The Year of Russia in China" in Beijing. This event launched his massive popularity in China. He later appeared in the Chinese film Mulan, where he provided music for the soundtrack.

In the following decade, Vitas continued to explore different musical and cinematic paths. He released the track "Light of A New Day" in 2008, which featured non-lyrical vocalization. He also starred in various television series and comedies. In 2011, he conducted a series of "Sleepless Night" concerts across North America. These shows took him to major cities like New York, Toronto, and Los Angeles. His ability to adapt to different markets helped him maintain a global presence. He even worked with the American label Gemini Sun Records to release compilations.

In recent years, Vitas has continued to experiment with modern musical styles. In 2019, he released his fifteenth album, titled Bit Bombit. He also celebrated 20 years as an artist with a new concert tour. He collaborated with Australian DJ Timmy Trumpet on a song called "The King." This collaboration included a performance at the Tomorrowland rave festival. In 2020, he released the OPERA20 EP in China, which included songs in English, Russian, and Chinese. This release was a limited edition, with only 1,000 vinyl copies produced.
