Viktor Robertovich Tsoi was a legendary Soviet singer-songwriter and actor. He was a pioneer of rock music in Russia. Tsoi's musical journey began in the underground scene of Leningrad. In the 1970s and 1980s, rock music was not officially supported by the Soviet government. Most media exposure went to state-endorsed pop stars. Rock bands often had no funding and little public space to play. The Leningrad Rock Club became a vital venue for these artists. Tsoi began writing his own songs at age 17. He played bass guitar in a group called Palata No. 6. He also performed at underground concerts with the band Avtomaticheskie udovletvoriteli. A talented musician named Boris Grebenshchikov noticed Tsoi's talent and helped him start his own band.

The formation of Kino happened through several stages. In the summer of 1981, Tsoi, Alexei Rybin, and Oleg Valinsky formed a group called Garin i giperboloydy. This name honored a classic Russian novel by Aleksey Tolstoy. After Valinsky was conscripted into the army, Tsoi and Rybin renamed the band Kino. In 1983, Yuri Kasparyan joined as the guitarist. The band recorded early albums like 45 and 46. The album 45 was named for its 45-minute duration. These early works were often distributed through magnitizdat, which means they were copied and passed around for free.

Tsoi had a diverse cultural background. He was born on June 21, 1962, in Leningrad. His mother, Valentina, was a Russian schoolteacher. His father, Robert, was a Soviet Korean engineer from Kazakhstan. His family were Koryo-saram, meaning ethnic Koreans living in the former USSR. His surname, Tsoi, is a romanization of the Cyrillic Цой. This comes from the Korean name Choi, which means "height" or "top." His ancestry can be traced back to the Wonju Choe clan in present-day North Korea.

His fame reached a massive scale during a period called "Kinomania." This surge in popularity followed the band's appearance in the 1987 film Assa. His sixth album, Gruppa Krovi, was especially influential. It addressed social problems and encouraged Soviet youth to seek change. The album's themes resonated across different Soviet republics. Fans even translated his Russian lyrics into their own native languages. In 1990, Kino performed at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. The concert was attended by 62,000 fans. This event was so significant that the Luzhniki Olympic Fire was lit for one of only four times.

Tsoi was also a successful film actor. In 1988, he starred as Moro in the Kazakh new wave art film The Needle. The film's plot involves Moro helping a former girlfriend fight a drug mafia in Almaty. Tsoi received a nomination for his acting role in this film. Despite his massive fame, Tsoi lived a very grounded life. He continued working at the Kamchatka boiler plant. He used the money from this job to support the band. This connection to ordinary work made him very relatable to his fans.

Investigators concluded he likely fell asleep due to fatigue. His car collided with an Ikarus 250 bus near Tukums. The accident destroyed his car completely. Tsoi's death caused immense grief across the Soviet Union. Thousands of people attended his funeral in Leningrad. Today, he remains a massive cultural figure.
