She is recognized as one of the most successful musical artists in Greek history. Vissi is credited with evolving the Greek music landscape through genre experimentation. She was among the first artists to blend Western pop and dance elements into traditional Greek styles. This fusion helped create the laïko-pop hybrid genre. This culture became very prominent from the mid-1990s until the mid-2000s. Her career spans decades of massive commercial success and cultural impact.

Vissi's musical journey began with rigorous formal training. She started studying at a local conservatory when she was only six years old. At age twelve, she won first prize in a talent competition. In 1973, she moved to Athens to study at the National Conservatory. While building her professional music career, she also studied law at the University of Athens.

She performed in the famous nightclubs of Plaka alongside well-known singers like George Dalaras and Haris Alexiou. She even worked as a radio producer for the program "Ta Koritsia Einai Atakta."

A defining element of Vissi's career is her partnership with songwriter Nikos Karvelas. They first collaborated in 1975 and later married in 1983. They had one daughter, Sofia, together. This partnership became one of the most successful in the nation's history.

Together, they even formed a record label called CarVi. Although CarVi faced legal issues with EMI Greece, the duo continued to dominate the charts. Since 1975, nearly all of her releases have featured songs by Karvelas. Most of these albums achieved gold or platinum status.

Vissi has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest multiple times. She represented Greece in 1980 with the song "Autostop," where she finished 13th. In 1982, she represented her native Cyprus with the song "Mono i agapi." This performance earned Cyprus its second-highest position in the contest at that time.

Her commercial achievements are supported by impressive numbers. Vissi has released over two dozen albums throughout her career. Her 2000 double album, Kravgi, became the eighth best-selling album of all time.

Beyond recorded music, Vissi has explored various performing arts. She starred in the first Greek rock opera, titled Daimones, in 1991.
