She began her journey singing in the group KUD Mozaik. The group's leader, Lepa Smoje, recognized her talent early on. Smoje even assigned her the role of Carmela in the musical "Frane Štrapalo." This early exposure to theater and music led her to enroll in the Josip Hatze High School of Music in Split. However, she eventually chose to leave her formal education to devote herself fully to a professional musical career.

Her rise to professional stardom followed a series of competitive successes in the 1980s. In 1982, she won the "Dječji prvi pljesak" (Children's First Applause) competition in Split with the song "Moja Milena." She followed this with a victory at the Croatian amateur singer competition in Daruvar in 1987. In 1990, she moved to Zagreb and won the "Demo X" radio competition. This victory provided the crucial opportunity to record her first self-titled album. By 1991, she was performing at the Split Festival, marking her transition into a professional recording artist.

Collaboration played a vital role in her career expansion, particularly with producer Zrinko Tutić.

During her time with Tutić and the production company Tutico, she released several successful albums. These included "Dalmatinka," "Trava zelena," "Moja stvar," and "Djevojka sa sela." The album "Dalmatinka" became a sensation, featuring the hit title track which celebrated her native Dalmatia. Her work during this era also included collaborations with artists like Dino Dvornik and the singer Gibonni. This period established her as a dominant force in the national music scene.

Severina's discography is marked by significant commercial milestones and diverse musical directions. In 1995, she released "Trava zelena," which featured the popular title track and a duet with Žera from Crvena Jabuka. Her 1996 album, "Moja stvar," explored rock influences and was supported by a sold-out concert at Dom Sportova in Zagreb. In 1998, the album "Djevojka sa sela" became a major breakthrough. The title track was even used as an unofficial anthem by the Croatian national football team during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Her 1999 album, "Ja samo pjevam," became her best-selling studio album, selling over 55,000 copies in Croatia alone.

Beyond studio recordings, Severina has achieved massive success through live performances and digital media. In July 2000, she performed a solo concert at the Stadion Stari plac in Split for more than 20,000 people. Her 2002 live album, "Virujen u te (najbolje uživo!)", won an award for being the best-selling live album.
