Known by nicknames such as the "Queen of Turkish Pop" and "Minik Serçe" (Little Sparrow), she has shaped the landscape of modern music. Her commercial success is immense, with over 40 million albums sold worldwide. Beyond her own performances, Aksu is a vital figure in the music industry due to her prolific songwriting and her role as a mentor. She has collaborated with and supported many prominent musicians, including Sertab Erener, Levent Yüksel, and Yıldız Tilbe. In 2010, the American radio station NPR recognized her global impact by naming her one of the "50 Great Voices" of the world.

Aksu's journey to stardom required significant determination. Born Fatma Sezen Yıldırım in Sarayköy, Turkey, she grew up in a household of educators. Her father, Sami Yıldırım, was a mathematics teacher of Laz origin. Her mother, Şehriban Hanım, was a science teacher. Because her parents hoped she would pursue a steady career as a doctor or an engineer, they initially discouraged her singing. To practice her craft, she would wait for them to leave the house before singing on the family balcony. Although she began studying at a local agricultural institute, she eventually left college to dedicate herself entirely to music.

Her professional career began in 1975 with the single "Haydi Şansım/Gel Bana," released under the name Sezen Seley. She achieved her first major breakthrough in 1976 when "Olmaz Olsun/Vurdumduymaz" reached number one on the Turkish charts. This success earned her the "Promising Female Artist of the Year" award. In 1977, she released her first full album, "Allahaısmarladık." While she competed in the national finals for the Eurovision Song Contest three times, she never represented Turkey in the international competition. However, her musical vision eventually reached Europe through her pupil, Sertab Erener, who went on to win the contest.

The 1980s marked a period of profound musical evolution for Aksu. During this decade, she maintained a significant romantic and professional partnership with the Turkish-Armenian producer Onno Tunç. Together, they produced groundbreaking works like "Sen Ağlama" and "Git." This collaboration continued into the 1990s, resulting in her best-selling album, "Gülümse." The album featured the hit track "Hadi Bakalım," which became a success in Turkey and Europe. This specific song was later rediscovered in the Europop genre by the singer Loona, who released it as "Rhythm of the Night."

In the mid-1990s, Aksu began exploring more experimental musical territories. Her 1995 album, "Işık Doğudan Yükselir," combined Western classical music with regional Turkish traditions. This stylistic fusion expanded her audience significantly across Europe. Following the tragic death of Onno Tunç in a private plane crash in 1996, she released "Düş Bahçeleri" as a tribute to him. She continued to push boundaries with subsequent albums like "Adı Bende Saklı" and "Yaz Bitmeden." Her ability to blend diverse musical elements helped define a unique Turkish pop sound that spread across the Balkans and Greece.

Aksu's influence extends into literature and social activism. In 2006, she published "Eksik Şiir," a collection of 197 songs she had written between 1975 and 2006. The book was an immediate success, selling 17,000 copies within its first four days.

Beyond writing, Aksu is a vocal advocate for various social causes in Turkey. She has championed minority rights, women's rights, environmental protection, and educational reform. She has also used her music to address political events, such as writing "Tanrının Gözyaşları" in memory of soldiers during the Kurdish–Turkish conflict. In the LGBT community, she is recognized as a major icon, having been named a favorite in surveys by the magazine KAOS GL.

Throughout her career, Aksu has navigated both immense praise and public controversy. In 2022, she faced criticism from religious and political figures regarding lyrics in her song "Ne Şahane Bir Şey Yaşamak." Despite the pressure, she remained active in the cultural conversation, stating that her voice could not be crushed.
