Zeki Müren was a monumental figure in Turkish culture. He was a classical music artist, composer, songwriter, actor, and poet.

Because of his massive impact on the arts, he was named a "State Artist" in 1991. He earned the nicknames "The Sun of Art" and "Pasha" from his many fans. Müren was also a pioneer in the music industry. He was the very first singer in Turkey to receive a gold certification. Throughout his long career, he recorded hundreds of songs on phonograph records and cassettes.

Müren's musical journey began with formal training and early competition. He studied decorative arts at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1953. While still a university student in 1950, he entered a music competition at TRT Istanbul Radio. He ranked number one out of 186 contestants. His first live radio performance occurred on January 1, 1951. During this broadcast, he was accompanied by several notable musicians. These included Hakkı Derman, Serif İçli, Şükrü Tunar, Refik Fersan, and Necdet Gezen.

His rise to national fame was driven by specific recordings and performances. In 1951, the clarinetist Şükrü Tunar took Müren to a recording studio in Yeşilköy. There, they recorded the song "Muhabbet Kuşu" on a phonograph record. This specific record helped his voice reach all of Anatolia. He later gave his first major concert on November 19, 1953, at the Great Cinema on Atatürk Boulevard.

In 1955, his song "Manolyam" achieved the historic gold certification. He also performed at the Maksim Casino with Behiye Aksoy for 11 years. In 1976, he became the first Turkish artist to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Müren was famous for his unique and often controversial public persona. He used fashion to express his creativity on stage. He often wore clothes that he designed himself. He introduced innovations like dressing uniforms and using a T-shaped podium. His style changed significantly over the decades. In the early years, he wore ordinary clothes and hairstyles. By 1958, he began wearing sequin jackets. From the 1960s onward, he adopted an androgynous identity through his clothing. In 1970, he became one of the first public figures in Turkey to wear a miniskirt.

Beyond music, Müren was a prolific creator in other fields. He was a talented actor who appeared in 18 movies after his debut in "Beklenen Şarkı" in 1953. He also moved into theater, playing a leading role in the play "Tea and Sempati" at the Arena Theatre in 1965. As a poet, he published a book in 1965 titled "Bıldırcın Yağmuru" (The Quail Rain). This collection contained nearly 100 poems, including works like "Pembe Yağmurlar" and "Bursa Sokağı." He was also known for his very clear way of speaking the Turkish language.

The final years of Müren's life were marked by health challenges. He suffered from diabetes and heart disease during his last six years. Because of these illnesses, he stayed away from the media and lived in Bodrum. He described this quiet time as a period for "listening to oneself." He passed away on September 24, 1996, following a heart attack during a ceremony at TRT İzmir Television. He was buried in his birthplace of Bursa at the Emirsultan Cemetery. His will left all his assets to the Turkish Education Foundation and the Mehmetçik Foundation.

Müren's legacy continues to influence Turkish society today. His birthday, December 6, has been celebrated as Turkish Art Music Day since 2012. His former home in Bodrum is now the Zeki Müren Art Museum.

The museum opened in 2000 and saw over 200,000 visitors by late 2006. It displays a bronze statue of him and his maroon 1976 Buick Regal car. Furthermore, the foundations he supported have used his wealth to help thousands of students. Specifically, the Zeki Müren Scholarship Fund has assisted 2,631 students over a 20-year period.
