Often called the "Megastar" or the "Prince of the Bosporus" by the press, he has become a central figure in European pop music. His musical influence is significant enough that the Washington Post compared his impact on Turkey to Elvis Presley's impact on the United States in 1957. Throughout his career, Tarkan has sold over 15 million album copies. He has also earned numerous honors, including four Turkey Music Awards and a World Music Award. His work is credited with helping to dissolve musical borders between Turkey and Europe.

Creating Tarkan's music involves complex layers of songwriting and production. He frequently acts as both a lyricist and a composer. For his debut album, Yine Sensiz, he wrote the lyrics for three songs and composed three others.

As his career progressed, he took even more control over his art. In 1997, he founded his own production company named Hitt Müzik. This allowed him to manage the creative process more closely. He often collaborates with other musicians and producers to refine his sound. This process results in the high-energy pop and traditional Turkish themes he is known for.

His discography includes several distinct eras and musical styles. His early work in the 1990s helped establish his pop persona. His third album, Ölürüm Sana, featured the massive hit "Şımarık," which also had an English version titled "Kiss Kiss." In 2001, his fourth album, Karma, introduced a new style. This era changed his musical image and his fashion, influencing many young men in Turkey. Later, in 2016, he released Ahde Vefa, which focused on a Classical Turkish theme. This shows his ability to move between modern pop and traditional sounds.

Tarkan's personal history is a journey between different cultures. He was born on October 17, 1972, in Alzey, West Germany. His mother, Neşe, named him after a comic book character. The name Tarkan itself comes from an ancient Turkic title meaning bold and strong. In 1986, he moved to Turkey with his parents and five siblings. He studied music at the Karamürsel Advanced Music Association and later at the Uskudar Music Society.

These diverse cultural roots helped shape his unique international appeal.

The scale of Tarkan's commercial success is immense. His second album, Aacayipsin, sold 2.5 million copies. His third album, Ölürüm Sana, reached 3.5 million sales. In 1999, his compilation album earned platinum and gold certifications in many different countries. He was the first artist of Turkish origin to sell 500,000 albums in France. Even his 2001 single "Kuzu Kuzu" sold hundreds of thousands of copies in both cassette and CD formats. These numbers demonstrate his massive reach across various international markets.

Several notable events and figures have shaped his path. While living in New York to study English at Baruch College, he met Ahmet Ertegun. Ertegun was the Turkish founder of Atlantic Records and became a mentor to Tarkan. Tarkan also faced professional challenges, such as a copyright dispute with Sezen Aksu over the song "Şımarık." This disagreement ended a successful musical partnership. Despite such hurdles, he continued to reach new heights, such as his 2010 album Adımı Kalbine Yaz, which became the best-selling album of the year in Turkey.

Tarkan's career connects the worlds of pop music, sociology, and international relations. His success signaled a "Turkish pop boom" in Europe during the 1990s. He proved that music can transcend language barriers. He noted that even if listeners do not understand the Turkish lyrics, they can still connect with the "groove." This connection helped bridge the gap between Turkey and the rest of Europe. His legacy remains a cornerstone in the history of European pop music.
