Music of Turkey

arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Turkish music is a vast and complex system of sound. It connects centuries of history with modern daily life. The roots of this music stretch back to the 11th century. This was when the Seljuk Turks migrated to Anatolia and Persia. Their arrival brought Turkic influences that mixed with older traditions. Today, music remains a vital part of social life. People use it for weddings, festivals, and family gatherings. Even as music industries grow, many people feel a strong sense of nostalgia for older styles.

Classical Turkish music is built on a very precise structure. It uses a system of scales and modes called makams. These makams allow musicians to create specific moods through different notes. One of the most important forms is the fasıl. A fasıl is a musical suite performed in a specific sequence. It begins with an instrumental prelude called a peşrev. This is followed by the main vocal section. During these songs, musicians perform instrumental improvisations called taksim. A full concert might include four instrumental forms and three vocal forms. One common vocal form is the şarkı, or light classical song.

History shows how different social spaces shaped musical styles. In the Ottoman Empire, the harem was a private area for women. Within these spaces, female musicians and dancers performed for the women. These female dancers were known as rakkase. They rarely appeared in public settings. However, male entertainers called rakkas performed for the public. They played at weddings, feasts, and festivals. This tradition eventually influenced modern oriental dance in Turkey. Other groups, like the Romani people, also shaped the sound. Romani musicians brought urban music to the public through tavernas, known as meyhanes. They often used instruments like the clarinet, violin, kanun, and the darbuka drum.

Turkish music has also had a massive impact on Western classical music. The Janissary bands, or Mehter, are among the oldest military marching bands in the world. These bands used loud percussion to create a powerful sound. In the 16th century, European nations began borrowing the idea of military marching bands from Turkey. By the 18th century, European composers became fascinated by these sounds. Joseph Haydn included Turkish instruments in his Military Symphony. Ludwig van Beethoven used Turkish elements in his Ninth Symphony. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart even wrote the famous "Ronda alla turca." These influences introduced the bass drum, cymbals, and bells into the standard Western symphony orchestra.

There has also been a strong Western influence on Turkish music. In 1827, Giuseppe Donizetti became the Master of Music to Sultan Mahmud II. This helped introduce European musical styles to the Ottoman court. Later, the creation of the Turkish republic led to even more Westernization. The Imperial Orchestra moved from Istanbul to Ankara. It was renamed the Presidential Symphony Orchestra. In 1924, new schools were founded to train musicians in Western styles. This movement produced the "Turkish Five," a group of talented composers. These musicians studied abroad to bring new techniques back to Turkey.

Modern Turkish music is incredibly diverse and changes with every decade. Before the 1960s, the scene was mostly classical or folk music. The 1970s saw the rise of Anatolian rock, led by artists like Cem Karaca. In the late 1980s, the arabesque genre became very popular. However, by the 1990s, pop music returned with great strength. This was helped by an opening economy and stars like Tarkan and Sertab Erener. The late 1990s also brought underground music. This included alternative rock, hip-hop, and electronica. These genres often rose in opposition to mainstream corporate pop.

In recent years, new movements continue to emerge. The 2010s saw the rise of indie groups called "Üçüncü Yeniler," or the Third New. These groups often use poetic or witty lyrics. Some even use meaningless names or puns for their groups. By the 2020s, electronic dance music and drill music began to top the charts. From the ancient makams of the court to modern electronic beats, the music of Turkey remains a living, breathing force.
