Her music has reached many different people across many lands.

Growing up, Aksu had to be very creative to follow her dreams. Her parents were teachers who wanted her to become a doctor or an engineer. To practice her singing, she would wait for them to leave the house. Then, she would sing songs on the family balcony. She eventually left her studies at an agricultural institute to focus on music. Along with Ajda Pekkan, she helped create the sound of modern Turkish pop music in the 1970s.

Her career began with a single called "Haydi Şansım/Gel Bana" in 1975. She used the name "Sezen Seley" at first. In 1976, her song "Olmaz Olsun/Vurdumduymaz" became a number one hit. That same year, she won an award for "Promising Female Artist of the Year." Her first full album, "Allahaısmarladık," arrived in 1977. She also tried many times to represent Turkey at the Eurovision Song Contest. Even though she did not win, her student Sertab Erener later won that contest.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Aksu worked with producer Onno Tunç. Together, they made music that changed Turkish pop. Her album "Gülümse" became her best-selling work. She also helped other singers like Aşkın Nur Yengi find success. In 1995, she made an experimental album called "Işık Doğudan Yükselir." This album used both western and Turkish musical styles. It helped her find a large audience in Europe.
