Utesov was more than just a singer; he was a versatile performer. He could sing, tell jokes, and act in films. His unique talent helped him become a massive star during the 20th century. In 1965, he achieved a historic milestone in his career. He became the first pop singer to receive the title of People's Artist of the USSR. This prestigious award recognized his massive influence on Soviet culture.

Utesov's performances were complex and highly structured musical shows. He did not simply stand and sing a single type of song. Instead, he created a hybrid style that blended many different musical genres. He built a band of the finest musicians in Leningrad to support his vision. His shows often featured a mix of American jazz and Russian folk music. He also incorporated Argentine tango and French chanson into his repertoire.

To add a comedic element, he integrated stand-up comedy into his musical sets. This combination of theater and jazz became his personal trademark.

During the 1930s, his musical group reached a new level of organization. He called his ensemble "Thea-Jazz," which was a portmanteau of the words "theatrical" and "jazz." This group performed at several famous venues in Leningrad. They played at the Marble Hall of the Kirov Palace of Culture. They also performed at the Leningrad Maly Opera theatre and the Leningrad Music Hall. His band provided a regular, high-quality musical experience for large audiences. This era helped establish him as a leader of the "red jazz age."

Utesov's life began in the city of Odessa in the Russian Empire. He was born Lazar Iosifovich Vaysbeyn, but later adopted the stage name Leonid Utesov. His early career was quite adventurous and varied. He dropped out of the Faig School of Commerce to join a circus. There, he worked as an acrobat with the Borodanov Circus troupe. He began his professional stage career in 1911 in Kremenchuk. After winning a singing competition in Gomel, Belarus, in 1917, he moved to Moscow. By the 1920s, he had relocated to Leningrad to pursue jazz.

His fame grew significantly through his work in cinema and international travel. In 1928, he toured Europe and visited Paris. Seeing American jazz bands in Paris deeply influenced his musical style. One of his biggest breakthroughs came from his collaboration with composer Isaak Dunayevsky. In the 1930s, he starred in the popular comedy film *Jolly Fellows*.

In this movie, he performed hit songs like "Serdtse" (Heart). His performance alongside actress Lyubov Orlova made him a household name.

Utesov also used his fame to support others during the hardships of World War II. He performed on the front lines to lift the spirits of Soviet soldiers. He showed his commitment by donating two La-5 fighter planes to a military regiment. One of these planes was even named "Jolly Fellows" after his film. He also donated forty-two of his own vinyl records to a frontline orchestra. On Victory Day, May 9, 1945, he performed in Moscow at Sverdlov Square. His music served as a source of strength during a very difficult time for his country.

Even after his death in 1982, Utesov's legacy continues through various tributes. He lived in Moscow for many years, but his heart remained in Odessa. In 2000, a monument was dedicated to him in his native Odessa. His impact is even recognized in outer space, as a minor planet named 5944 Utesov was discovered in 1984.
