People used to call it A'ua'u Enua. This name means "terraced island." Geologists think the island is at least 18 million years old. It rises very high from the ocean floor.

The shape of the island is very interesting to see. It has a high ring of cliffs made of fossil coral. This ring is called the makatea. These cliffs are 60 metres high. Inside this ring, there are swamps and a central plateau. Water flows through secret underground channels in the rock. This creates a huge network of caves. People have used these caves for shelter and burials for a long time. The highest point is a hill called Rangi-motia. It stands 169 metres above the sea.

Humans have lived on Mangaia for a very long time. Some say people settled there around 1000 CE. Local stories say the island emerged from an underworld called Avaiki. Later, people came from places like Tahiti and Tonga. In 1775, a man named Tamaeu gave the island its current name. He came from Aitutaki. Later, Captain James Cook arrived on his ship in 1777. In the 1820s, missionaries arrived to teach about Christianity. This changed how the island was run.

The island's economy has changed many times. For a long time, people grew crops like sweet potatoes. Later, they grew citrus, bananas, and coffee. In 1946, they started growing pineapples. This industry was very successful for many years. However, the pineapple business failed in the 1980s. An economic crisis followed in 1996. Because of this, many people moved away to other places. The population dropped by 75% from its highest point. Today, people also make necklaces from snail shells.

Nature on the island is also very diverse. There are five different zones where plants grow. You can find coconut trees and ferns in many areas. Some birds, like the Pacific reef heron, still live there. Other birds, like the Mangaia rail, are now extinct. The island is an Important Bird Area for many species. Since 2018, the island has used a solar-battery power station. This helps provide energy using the sun. It is a very unique way to power a community.
