The island has a high ring of cliffs. These cliffs are made of fossil coral. This ring is called the makatea. Inside the cliffs, there are swamps and a flat area. Water flows through secret paths in the ground. This makes many deep caves. People used these caves for shelter and burials.

The highest point is Rangi-motia. It is 169 meters above the sea. There is also a fresh lake in the south called Lake Tiriara. Many birds live on the island. Some birds, like the Pacific reef heron, live near the water.

Many people lived on Mangaia in the past. They grew crops like sweet potato and pineapples. Growing pineapples helped the island make money. But the pineapple industry failed in the 1980s. Since then, many people have moved away. The population is much smaller now. Today, people make necklaces from snail shells to sell.
