Many people visited this place in the past. A man named Philip Carteret saw it in 1767. Later, people used the land to work with copra. Copra is dried coconut meat. No one lives on the atoll now.

France used Moruroa for nuclear tests. They did this from 1966 to 1996. Some tests were in the air. Others were deep under the ground. These tests caused many people to protest.

One test in 1979 was very big. It caused a landslide under the sea. This made a wave called a tsunami. Now, the land is not safe to visit. There is high radiation there. French forces still guard the atoll. Scientists study the land to see if it will collapse.
