People have lived in this area for a very long time. Humans first arrived around 42,000 to 45,000 years ago. They were part of early migrations from Africa. Long ago, people in the highlands learned to farm plants on their own. They grew things like sago and karuka. Later, the sweet potato arrived from South America. This new food helped the population grow in the highlands.
In the 1800s, different countries began to control the land. Germany took the north and Britain took the south.
Later, Australia took control of both areas. The two territories fought during World War II.

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is an island nation located in Oceania.
It occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea. The country also includes hundreds of offshore islands in Melanesia. This region sits in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, north of Australia. To the west, PNG shares a land border with Indonesia. To the south, it has maritime borders with Australia. The Solomon Islands lie to its east. The capital city is Port Moresby.
The total land area is 462,840 km2.
The geography of the nation is defined by highly mountainous terrain.
This rugged landscape creates many different environments. Because of this, the land supports about 5% of all known species on Earth. The economy is an export-driven system that depends on natural resources. Many people live in rural areas rather than cities. In 2023, only 14% of the population lived in urban centres. Nearly 40% of the population are subsistence farmers. These farmers live relatively independently of the cash economy.
Human history in the region began tens of thousands of years ago. Archaeological evidence shows humans arrived around 42,000 to 45,000 years ago. These people were part of early migrations from Africa. They settled the mainland and the Bismarck Archipelago. Bougainville was settled by 28,000 years ago. Manus Island was settled by 20,000 years ago. About 10,000 years ago, rising sea levels isolated New Guinea from Australia. This isolation allowed distinct populations to develop. In the highlands, people independently developed agriculture around 7000 BC. They domesticated plants like sago, Canarium indicum, and karuka.
European influence changed the region during the 16th and 19th centuries. The Portuguese explorer António de Abreu was the first European to discover the island. Later, the Spanish explorer Yñigo Ortiz de Retez named it "New Guinea." He thought the people resembled those from the Guinea coast of Africa. In the 1800s, European powers divided the land. Germany controlled the north, known as German New Guinea. The United Kingdom controlled the south, known as the Territory of Papua.
In 1902, the British territory was ceded to Australia. After World War I, Australia administered both territories separately.
World War II brought significant conflict to the islands. During the New Guinea campaign, Japanese forces invaded in mid-1942. They moved south through the Kokoda Track toward Port Moresby. Australian forces fought rearguard actions to defend the area. The Battle of Milne Bay also saw Japanese attacks repulsed by Australian and American forces. This fighting was a turning point in the Pacific War. In total, about 216,000 Japanese, Australian, and U.S. servicemen died during the campaign. Following the war, the two territories were finally united in 1949. Papua New Guinea became an independent Commonwealth realm in 1975.
Papua New Guinea is the most linguistically diverse country in the world. There are 840 known spoken languages in the nation.
Because there are so many languages, people use English and Tok Pisin to communicate. Tok Pisin is a Melanesian Pidgin language. This linguistic variety can sometimes lead to political friction. The population is also very diverse in its cultural practices. While official estimates suggest 11.8 million people, satellite data suggests the number is closer to 17 million. Christianity is a major part of life for the majority of the people. In March 2025, the constitution was amended to make Christianity the official state religion.
