It is a landlocked nation, which means it has no coastline or ocean nearby. Most of the country sits within the huge Himalayan mountain range. To the north, Nepal shares a border with the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. India sits to the south, east, and west of the country. Nepal is also very close to Bhutan and Bangladesh.

The landscape in Nepal changes a lot depending on where you stand. You can find flat and fertile plains in some areas. Other parts of the country have green, forested hills. Most importantly, Nepal is home to eight of the ten highest mountains on Earth. This includes Mount Everest, which is the highest point on the planet. The capital and largest city is called Kathmandu.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. Some evidence of human settlements dates back about 30,000 years. In ancient times, the Kathmandu Valley was a very important place. It was a center for trade on the Himalayan branch of the Silk Road. This helped the region develop its own special art and buildings. Many different groups of people have lived there through the ages.

Hinduism is also the main religion in the country today. For a long time, Nepal was ruled by kings and dynasties. The Gorkha Kingdom helped unify the country during the 18th century.
