Oceania is a huge region found in the Pacific Ocean.

Many people think of it as a continent. Australia is the main piece of land in this area. The region is made of many different island groups. These include Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. The ocean acts like a bridge that connects all these places. It is the smallest continent in the world by land area. However, it covers a vast space across the water.

The land in Oceania looks very different from place to place. Much of the island of New Guinea is covered in tropical rainforest. These forests are the third largest left on Earth. In some areas, the land is high and rocky. The highest point is Puncak Jaya in Indonesia. It reaches a height of 4,884 meters.

Some places are very developed with strong financial markets. These include Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. Other island nations like Kiribati or Tuvalu have different ways of living. Many of these islands rely on tourism to help their economies.

People have called these islands home for a very long time. The first settlers arrived more than 60,000 years ago. Aboriginal Australians have a special way of making art. This is the longest continuous art tradition in the world. Later, explorers from Europe arrived starting in the 16th century. Portuguese explorers reached the Tanimbar Islands and parts of New Guinea. Spanish, Dutch, British, and French explorers also traveled here.

Australia is the biggest and most crowded country in the region. Its largest city is Sydney. Most countries in Oceania are parliamentary democracies. This means they have specific ways of choosing their leaders. The region has seen big changes over the years. For example, the Pacific was a place of major action during the World Wars.

Many different flags represent the many nations found here.

Scientists and map makers have different ways to describe Oceania. The name comes from the Greek word for ocean. In the 1800s, geographers used different names for the groups of islands. Some people used names based on where people lived. Today, some scholars use new terms like Near Oceania and Remote Oceania.

The United Nations also has its own way of grouping the countries. They include places like Fiji, Samoa, and Tonga in their list. Even though the islands are far apart, they are all part of one great oceanic region.
