You can find it stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Red Sea in the east. Many different countries make up this area, such as Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia. Some people also include Western Sahara or Sudan in this group. The region is very close to the Mediterranean Sea to the north. It is also near the Middle East and parts of Europe. This location makes it a very important part of the world.

The land here has three very different looks. In the west, the Atlas Mountains rise high above the ground.

In the east, the Nile River flows through the landscape. The river creates a wide, green area called a delta. This area is where you can see the famous Pyramids of Giza.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. Some of the earliest humans lived here even millions of years ago.

In the northwest, the Berber people have lived for a long time. In the east, the Ancient Egyptians built great civilizations. Later, in the seventh and eighth centuries, Arabs came from the Arabian Peninsula. This changed the culture and the language of many people. Today, most people in these countries are part of the Arab world.

History in North Africa has seen many strong groups come and go. The Carthaginians were a powerful group with a strong navy. Later, the Roman Empire took control of much of the land. North Africa was a very important place for growing grain for Rome. After the Romans, different groups like the Vandals and the Byzantines ruled. Eventually, Muslim rule began to spread across the region. This brought new ways of life and new buildings, like the Great Mosque of Kairouan.

North Africa is connected to many other places in interesting ways. It shares a lot of culture and language with the Middle East. This link is so strong that people often group them together. The region also has ties to the islands near Europe. Places like the Canary Islands or Madeira are quite close to the African coast.
