It sits on the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. Most of this land is now the Republic of Yemen. However, the region used to include more places. It once held Najran, Jazan, and Asir. These areas are in Saudi Arabia today. It also included Dhofar, which is in Oman now. The people there share special cultures and traditions. These ties go across modern borders.

The name of this land tells a story. One idea is that Yemen comes from a word meaning "South." This refers to the land to the right. Other sources say the name relates to being blessed. This is because much of the land is fertile. The Romans even called it Arabia Felix. This means "fertile Arabia." They used this name to tell it apart from the desert.

Three thousand years ago, groups like Saba lived there. Other states were M'ain, Qataban, and Hadhramaut. These people were famous for the incense trade. They also built a great dam at Marib. People even tell legends about a Queen of Sheba. These ancient times were full of busy trade.

Many different groups tried to rule the region. Two thousand years ago, the Himyarites were the masters. Later, the Kingdom of Aksum from Ethiopia invaded. King Kaleb ruled the area around the year 520. Soon after, Persian forces arrived by sea. These forces came from the Sassanid dynasty around 575. Finally, the region converted to Islam in the year 628.

South Arabia has always been a busy place for travel. It was part of the Indian Ocean trade routes. For thousands of years, ships moved goods through these waters. Because of this, some old writers called it "India." This happened because of how Persians described people in the area. Later, the Omani Empire made ties even stronger. They connected India to Africa and Madagascar. This helped the region stay linked to the wide world.
