Hadhramaut is a large and interesting region in the southern Arabian Peninsula.

It covers parts of Yemen, Oman, and Saudi Arabia. The land changes quite a lot depending on where you stand. In the north, the high plateau slopes down into the Empty Quarter desert. This area is very dry and sandy. Further south, you will find the Wadi Hadhramaut. This is a large river valley with many smaller streams.

Near the coast, there is a narrow plain by the Arabian Sea. The steep Jowl escarpment rises about 1,370 meters above this plain. The region is split into Inner Hadhramaut and Coastal Hadhramaut.

Life in this region depends on how the land is shaped. In the lush wadis, people build towns around oasis wells. They use the water to farm many things. You can find wheat, millet, dates, coconuts, and coffee growing there.

These valleys look very green compared to the dry desert nearby. On the high plateau, life is a bit different. Bedouin herders live here and move their animal flocks across the land. The people who live in this region are called the Hadharem. While they used to speak an old language, most now speak the Hadhrami dialect of Arabic.

This place has a history that goes back a very long time. People have lived in the wadis since the Stone Age.

Long ago, there was a powerful Kingdom of Hadhramaut. Its capital city was Shabwa, which sat on a famous trade route. The people in this kingdom worshipped a moon god named Sin. Later, they began to follow a single god called Rahmanan. The kingdom was very important for connecting different parts of the world. It linked Arabia and East Africa to the Roman Empire and Mesopotamia.

In the past, Hadhramaut was famous for its trade in scents. They traded valuable items called frankincense and myrrh.

These scents traveled along long paths called incense routes. Merchants would travel through places like Dhofar and Shabwa to reach the Mediterranean. The region became very wealthy by taxing these traveling caravans. The name Hadhramaut itself is quite mysterious. Some say it means "death has come." Others believe it might mean "the green place" because of the lush valleys.

Many different groups have influenced Hadhramaut over the centuries. The Portuguese arrived on the coast in the 1600s, but they did not stay long. Later, the Ottoman Empire held control over the area for a long time. Islam arrived in the region when the prophet Muhammad sent a teacher there. Since then, different groups have followed different ways of practicing Islam. Some people from Hadhramaut even traveled far away to live in other lands.
