It is made of many islands and groups of people. These people have their own art, music, and stories. Many experts divide the region into four main areas. These are Australasia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Each area has its own special traits and languages. Some cultures come from the people who lived there first. Other parts come from people who moved there later. This mix makes the region very diverse and interesting.

In many places, traditions bring people together to share food and joy.

In Papua New Guinea, people hold festivals called sing sings. They dress up in feathers, pearls, and animal skins. They might look like birds or mountain spirits during these times. Some tribes also practice a stone burning tradition. They heat stones until they are very hot. Then, they use the stones to cook meat and sweet potatoes on banana leaves. This is a way to show thanks and gather the village.

History has shaped how people live in these islands today.

In New Zealand, the Māori people have a long history. They belong to family groups called whānau, subtribes called hapū, and tribes called iwi. In the past, Māori culture faced hard times when people tried to change it. Now, Māori identity remains a vital part of life. You can see Māori influence in symbols like the silver fern. This fern appears on many sporting uniforms and army badges.

Different islands use very unique items for money and art.

On the island of Yap, people use Rai stones as money. These are large stone disks with holes in the middle. Some are very big, and their value comes from their size and history. In the Solomon Islands, people make shell money. This is made of small, polished shell disks on strings. In Vanuatu, pigs with rounded tusks are a symbol of wealth. These traditions show how much people value their history.

Oceania connects to the modern world through many different paths.

Many countries in the Pacific use tourism to help their economies. You can see modern influences like cinema and TV everywhere. In New Caledonia, there is even a type of music called Kaneka. It started in the 1980s and is inspired by reggae. People also celebrate their roots through big events like the Pasifika festival in Auckland. Whether through stone money or new music, the region is always changing.
