The main goal is to score points by rolling five dice. You try to make specific groups called combinations. A "Yahtzee" happens when all five dice show the same number. This earns you 50 points, which is the highest score for one group. Players compete to see who can get the most total points. It is a game of skill and a bit of luck.

A single game lasts for exactly thirteen rounds. During each turn, you can roll the dice up to three times. After the first roll, you can choose to keep some dice and re-roll the others. You can do this again after the second roll if you want. Each round, you must pick one category box on your scorecard to fill. Once you use a box, you cannot use that same category again. The scorecard is split into an upper section and a lower section.

The history of the game is quite interesting. It grew from older games like Poker Dice, Generala, and Yacht. An anonymous Canadian couple is said to have invented the game. They called it "The Yacht Game" because they played it on their yacht. A man named Edwin S. Lowe bought the rights from them. He traded 1,000 gift sets for the game in 1956. Lowe helped make the game famous by hosting special Yahtzee parties.

Many people have played and bought this game over the years. The E.S. Lowe Company sold it from 1956 until 1973. Then, the Milton Bradley Company bought the company and the rights. Today, a company called Hasbro owns the game. By 2007, Hasbro said that 50 million Yahtzee games were sold each year. Some people even play in huge contests. Every January, a large tournament happens in Eureka, California. This event can have over 200 players at 30 tables.

You might recognize the game from many different places. It is a classic game that many families play at home. The game has many rules that make it deep and fun. For example, the "Joker rule" lets a Yahtzee count for other categories. You can also earn a 35-point bonus in the upper section. The highest possible score anyone can get is 1,575 points. This requires rolling thirteen Yahtzees in a row! It is a wonderful way to spend time with friends.
