Players roll five dice to achieve various patterns. The ultimate goal is to accumulate the highest total score. This game is a development of several older dice games. These include Poker Dice, Generala, and the English game Cheerio. It is also closely related to Yacht, a game dating back to at least 1938.

While similar to Yacht, Yahtzee introduced several unique features. It added the upper section bonus and the Three of a Kind category. It also introduced the Small Straight, which is a sequence of four dice. Additionally, Yahtzee added the Joker rule and specific Yahtzee bonuses.\n\nTo play a game, you must navigate thirteen distinct rounds. During each turn, a player can roll the dice up to three times. After the first roll, you may choose to save specific dice. You then re-roll the remaining dice to try and improve your set. This process can be repeated after the second roll. You have complete choice over which dice to keep or re-roll.

At the end of each round, you must select one category on your scorecard. Once a category is filled, it cannot be used again in that game. The game concludes after thirteen rounds when all category boxes are filled. The winner is the player with the highest total sum of all boxes and bonuses.\n\nThe Yahtzee scorecard is divided into two main parts. The upper section contains six boxes based on individual numbers. These categories are Aces, Twos, Threes, Fours, Fives, and Sixes. You score points by adding the total value of dice matching that number. For example, rolling three "Twos" would score 6 points. If a player reaches 63 points in this section, they earn a 35-point bonus. This bonus is a major way to boost a total score. Players often track if they are \"up\" or \"down\" relative to the average of three per box.\n\nThe lower section features poker-themed categories with fixed or variable values. These include Three of a Kind, Four of a Kind, and Full House. A Full House requires three of one number and two of another. The game also features Small Straights and Large Straights. A Small Straight is a sequence of four dice, such as 1-2-3-4. A Large Straight is a sequence of five dice, like 2-3-4-5-6. The most famous category is the Yahtzee, which occurs when all five dice are the same. A Yahtzee scores 50 points, the highest single category value. There is also a Chance category for rolls that do not fit elsewhere.\n\nSpecial rules exist for when a player rolls multiple Yahtzees. If you roll a Yahtzee after already filling the Yahtzee box, you earn a 100-point bonus. You can also use a Yahtzee as a \"Joker.\" In the official forced Joker rule, the player must use specific categories. If the corresponding upper section box is used, you must use a lower section box. This allows a Yahtzee to count as a Full House, Small Straight, or Large Straight. These categories would then score 25, 30, or 40 points respectively. There are alternative versions of this rule, such as the free choice Joker rule. The original 1956 rules had different requirements for using Jokers in the upper section.\n\nThe history of Yahtzee is tied to the entrepreneur Edwin S. Lowe. According to Hasbro, an anonymous Canadian couple invented the game. They called it \"The Yacht Game\" because they played it on their yacht. Lowe acquired the rights by trading 1,000 gift sets to the couple. He first marketed the game under the name Yahtzee in 1956. Initially, the game struggled because the rules were hard to explain in ads. Lowe solved this by organizing Yahtzee parties to show people how to play. This word-of-mouth success helped the game become a global phenomenon.\n\nYahtzee has seen massive commercial success over many decades. The E.S. Lowe Company sold over 40 million games worldwide. In 1973, the Milton Bradley Company purchased the Lowe Company. They assumed all rights to produce and sell the game. Today, the game is owned by Hasbro. As of 2007, Hasbro reported that 50 million Yahtzee games are sold each year. The game is even the subject of large tournaments. Every January, a tournament in Eureka, California, hosts over 200 players. This event uses 30 tables to raise money for local non-profits. The theoretical maximum score in a single game is 1,575 points.",
