Monopoly is a famous multiplayer board game centered on economics.

The game simulates the process of land ownership and market domination. Its name comes from the economic concept of a monopoly. A monopoly occurs when a single entity dominates an entire market. In this game, players attempt to achieve this by controlling property. The ultimate objective is to drive all opponents into bankruptcy. This is accomplished by collecting rent from other players who land on your spaces.

To play, participants move tokens clockwise around a square board.

Movement is determined by rolling two standard dice. Some versions also include an extra special red die called a Speed Die.

The board consists of forty distinct spaces. These include twenty-eight properties, such as twenty-two streets, four railroads, and two utilities. There are also three Chance spaces and three Community Chest spaces. Players also encounter tax squares and four corner squares. These corners include "Go," "Jail/Just Visiting," "Free Parking," and "Go to Jail."

Success in Monopoly requires careful management of resources and strategic trading. A core strategy involves acquiring all properties of a specific color group. Once a player owns a full color set, they can develop the land. They do this by adding cardboard houses and eventually hotels. These buildings significantly increase the amount of rent collected from opponents. Players also manage cash flow through various game mechanics. They receive a salary every time they pass the "Go" square. However, they may lose money through tax squares or specific cards.

The history of the game is a complex tale of collaboration and change. It originated from The Landlord's Game, created in 1903 by Lizzie Magie. Magie was an American anti-monopolist who wanted to teach economic theories. Specifically, she aimed to demonstrate the ideas of Henry George regarding taxation. Her original game was an educational tool against private monopolies. She patented her design in 1904. Magie's game featured a square circuit of spaces. It was intended to show how concentrating land in private hands could impact an economy.

The transition to the modern Monopoly occurred through several decades. In 1932, Charles Darrow learned of The Landlord's Game from friends. He developed his own version, which he called Monopoly. Darrow added symbols for electricity, water, and railway stations. He also used oil cloth to create a game board. Parker Brothers eventually bought the copyrights from Darrow. They also purchased Magie's patent for $500 after learning she was the inventor. Parker Brothers began marketing the official version on November 5, 1935. The original board used street names from Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Monopoly has achieved massive global significance over the last century. It has been licensed in more than 113 countries. The game is printed in more than 46 different languages. It is estimated that 275 million copies have been sold worldwide. During World War II, the game even served a secret purpose. The British Secret Intelligence Service created special editions for prisoners of war.

These sets contained hidden maps, compasses, and real money to aid escapes. This shows how a simple game can have unexpected real-world uses.

Today, the game is owned by Hasbro, which acquired Parker Brothers in 1991. Hasbro has expanded the brand through hundreds of different editions and spin-offs. They often use public input to decide on new features. For example, internet users voted on new game pieces. This led to the return of the Thimble and the removal of the T-Rex. In 2008, a major graphic redesign updated the board's colors and card text. The game continues to evolve through new technology and cultural trends. It remains a primary example of how a simple economic concept can become a global phenomenon.
