In this game, players act like landlords. They move their tokens around a square board by rolling two dice.

As they move, they can buy properties like streets, railroads, and utilities. If a player owns all the properties of one color, they can build houses and hotels. When other players land on these spaces, they must pay rent to the owner. The main goal is to collect enough money to make others go bankrupt. You can also find money through Chance and Community Chest cards.

Playing the game involves many different steps and choices. First, you roll the dice to see how many spaces you move. You might land on a property that is for sale. If you buy it, you add it to your collection. You might also land on a tax space where you must pay money.

Sometimes, players land on a space that sends them to jail. If you are in jail, you cannot move until you meet certain rules. You can also collect a salary every time you pass the "Go" square. Strategic players try to trade properties to complete their color sets.

The history of the game is quite interesting. It began with a game called The Landlord's Game. Lizzie Magie created this in 1903 in the United States.

She wanted to teach people about economics and land taxes. Her game had a square board with corner squares and spaces in between. Later, Charles Darrow played a version of this game. He created his own version called Monopoly. Parker Brothers bought the rights and began marketing it on November 5, 1935. The first boards used names from Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Monopoly has become a huge part of the world. It has been sold in more than 113 countries.

These games actually hid maps and compasses inside to help people escape. Today, the company Hasbro owns the game. They have released many different editions for fans to enjoy.

You might recognize many parts of Monopoly from movies or stores. There are hundreds of different editions and spin-offs. Some sets are based on famous places or themes. In 2008, the game got a major redesign with new colors and graphics.

Some players even use a "Speed Die" to make the game move faster. You can even vote on new game pieces, like the return of the Thimble. The game continues to change as people play it all over the world.
