Each player has a special piece called a token. You start at the bottom square of a numbered grid. Most boards use an 8x8, 10x10, or 12x12 grid of squares. You roll a single die to decide how many spaces to move. If you land on the bottom of a ladder, you climb up. If you land on the head of a snake, you slide down. If you roll a 6, you get to roll again right away.

This game has a very long and interesting history.

It began in ancient India as a game called Moksha Patam. This name means "liberation lesson" in English. It was part of a family of games like gyan chauper and pachisi. The game traveled to the United Kingdom in the 1890s. Later, a version called Chutes and Ladders was made in the United States. This version was published by the Milton Bradley Company starting in 1943.

In the original Indian version, the game taught deep lessons.

The ladders represented virtues like faith, generosity, and humility. The snakes represented vices like anger, theft, and greed. There were usually more snakes than ladders to show that being good is hard. Reaching square 100 represented reaching Moksha, which is spiritual liberation. In Victorian England, the rules changed to match English ideas. Ladders then stood for things like thrift and industry. Snakes stood for things like disobedience and poverty.

Today, you can find many different ways to play.

In the United States, Chutes and Ladders uses playground slides instead of snakes. This version uses a spinner instead of a die to move. In Canada, some versions even use toboggan runs instead of snakes. Some schools use the game to teach about the environment or climate change. Researchers have even found that playing these games helps young children with math. Whether it is a digital game or a cardboard one, it remains a classic.
