If you own a color group, you can add houses or hotels. When other players land on your space, they pay you rent. The goal is to collect money and make others go bankrupt.

The game has a long history. Lizzie Magie made a game in 1903 called The Landlord's Game. She wanted to teach people about how land and money work. Later, Charles Darrow made a version called Monopoly. Parker Brothers first sold it in 1935. The first boards used names from Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Today, people play many versions of the game. It is sold in over 113 countries.
