Candy Land

arts Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Candy Land is a famous racing game.

Eleanor Abbott made the game in 1948. She was a teacher. She made it for sick children in a hospital. Milton Bradley first sold the game in 1949. It became a huge hit. Over 50 million copies have been sold. It is even in the National Toy Hall of Fame.

Players race to find King Kandy. The board has a long path with 134 spaces. Most spaces have bright colors like red, blue, or yellow. Some spaces are special places. You might visit Candy Cane Forest or Gumdrop Mountain. You might meet characters like Queen Frostine.

To play, you take cards from a stack. Most cards show one color. You move your marker to the next space of that color. Some cards have two marks. These let you move even further. You win by reaching the Candy Castle at the end. There is no hard strategy. You only need to follow the cards. This makes it perfect for young children.

Some new versions even use a spinner instead of cards.
