A Eurogame is a specific class of tabletop game.

These games are also known as German-style or Euro-style games. They focus on economic competition and strategic planning rather than direct conflict. Unlike American-style games, which often rely on luck and drama, Eurogames emphasize thoughtful interaction. One of the most important rules in a Eurogame is the lack of player elimination. This means no one is forced to stop playing before the game ends.

This design choice ensures that every participant remains engaged until the final score is tallied.

To play a Eurogame, players must master various mechanical systems. These systems often involve managing limited resources to achieve specific goals. One common mechanic is tile placement, where players place components to build a map or landscape.

Another method is worker placement, where players choose actions in a specific sequence. In these games, once an action is chosen, others may be blocked from using it. Other players might use auctions to bid on resources or actions.

Some games also use set collection, where players gather specific groups of items to earn points. These mechanics require players to constantly shift their tactics based on the changing game state.

Eurogames are categorized by their complexity and intended audience. While many are designed for families, a sub-genre exists for serious enthusiasts. These are often called "expert games" or "gamer's games."

Titles like Agricola, released in 2007, introduced deeper resource management and longer play times. Later, Terra Mystica was released in 2012 by Helge Ostertag and Jens Drögemüller. These expert games provide heightened decision depth and multiple paths to victory. This variety ensures high replay value because players can try different strategies each time.

The history of the genre is rooted in postwar Germany. Following the war, there was an aversion to products that glorified military conflict. This led to the popularity of the 3M series of strategy games, such as Acquire. These games focused on peaceful economic competition instead of warfare. The genre became a concentrated design movement in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It eventually spread to France, the Netherlands, and Sweden.

A major turning point occurred in 1995 with the publication of The Settlers of Catan. While not the first Eurogame, it was the first to achieve massive success outside of Europe. It sold millions of copies in Germany alone and brought global attention to the genre.

Success in the Eurogame market is often tied to the skill of specific designers. Because their names are so important, the genre is sometimes called "designer games."

Reiner Knizia is one of the most famous names, known for using mathematical principles like auction mechanics. His works include titles such as Modern Art and Ra. Other notable designers include Antoine Bauza, who created 7 Wonders, and Stefan Feld, who uses dice to create various scoring paths. Designers like Vlaada Chvátil even use "learning scenarios" in rulebooks to help players progress through complex rules. This focus on individual authorship has created a dedicated following among enthusiasts worldwide.

Eurogames use specific themes to ground their mechanical challenges.

For example, Carcassonne uses a medieval theme where players build walled cities and roads. Puerto Rico uses an 18th-century setting where players develop island plantations. Other games use themes like running a power company in Power Grid or being an architect in Bruxelles 1893. While the theme provides a setting, the mechanics are the primary focus. The goal is to provide a complex challenge through the game's internal systems rather than just matching a story.

Today, the Eurogame industry is a massive global phenomenon. While Germany remains a leader in per capita board game purchases, the genre is played everywhere. Large conventions show the scale of this interest. In 2024, 204,000 people attended the Essen Spiel convention in Germany. The genre also continues to evolve by supporting solo play. Games like Wingspan and Spirit Island allow players to compete against simulated opponents. This adaptability ensures that Eurogames remain a vital and growing part of modern tabletop culture.
