Jenga is a famous game of physical skill.

The name comes from the Swahili word *kujenga*. This word means "to build" or "to construct." People love this game because it tests how steady your hands can be. It is a game of great focus and tension. As the tower grows, everyone watches closely to see if it will tip.

To play, you need 54 wooden blocks. Each block is three times as long as it is wide.

You start by stacking them into a solid tower. The tower has 18 layers with three blocks in each layer. Players take turns removing one block from anywhere below the top level. You must place that block horizontally on the very top. You can only use one hand to touch the tower at a time. You can nudge a block to see if it is loose. However, you must put it back if you do not move it.

Leslie Scott created this game. It grew from a game her family played in the early 1970s. They used wooden building blocks from a sawmill in Takoradi, Ghana. Scott was born in Tanganyika, which is now Tanzania. She grew up speaking both English and Swahili. She launched the official Jenga game at the London Toy Fair in January 1983.

Jenga has become a huge success worldwide. By 2019, people had sold over 80 million Jenga games. That is more than 4.3 billion individual blocks!

In 1985, a man named Robert Grebler built a very tall tower. It reached 40 levels high! In 2020, the game was even put into the National Toy Hall of Fame. This shows how much people value the game.

There are many different ways to play Jenga today. Some versions use colorful blocks or special shapes.

There is even a giant version called Jenga XXL. These blocks are eighteen inches long. You can use two hands to move those big blocks. Some sets even feature characters like Super Mario or Harry Potter. Whether playing with small blocks or giant ones, the goal is always the same. You must build without letting the tower fall.
