White tea is a special kind of tea. It comes from the Camellia sinensis plant.

Many people find it very interesting. It has a very light flavor. This taste is lighter than black tea or green tea. Even though it is called white tea, the liquid is pale yellow. The name comes from tiny silvery-white hairs on the tea buds. These hairs make the young plant look white. People value this tea for its gentle nature.

Making this tea is a very simple process. First, people pick young leaves and buds. The picking must be very careful to get high quality. These leaves are then allowed to wither. After that, they go through a drying stage. Some tea is dried in the air. Other tea is dried by the sun. Some makers even use machines to dry it. This way of making tea does not use rolling or shaking.

History tells us that white tea is quite old. Scholars do not agree on exactly when it began. It may have started in the last two hundred years. English books first mentioned it in 1876. Back then, people called it a black tea. This was because the leaves are not steamed like green tea. Today, we know it is its own special style. Some people call it China White or Fujian White.

There are many different types of white tea to know. Silver Needle, or Baihao Yinzhen, is the highest quality. It uses only the tea buds. White peony, or Bai Mudan, uses one bud and two leaves. Gongmei tea has three or four leaves. The lowest grade is called Shoumei. It has many leaves but very few buds. Some special tea called Yue guan bai is dried under moonlight. This tea comes from many places like China and Nepal.
