White tea comes from the Camellia sinensis plant.

It gets its name from tiny white hairs. These hairs grow on the young buds. They give the plant a white look. When you brew the tea, it is pale yellow. It has a light taste. This is lighter than black or green tea.

Making white tea uses a simple way. People pick young leaves and buds. Then they let them wither and dry. They may use the sun or machines. Some people even dry tea under moonlight. This is called Yue guan bai.

There are many kinds of white tea. Silver Needle, or Baihao Yinzhen, uses only buds. This is the highest quality. White peony, or Bai Mudan, uses one bud and two leaves. Gongmei tea uses more leaves. Shoumei is the lowest grade. It has many leaves but few buds.

Most white tea comes from China. It grows in the Fujian province. It also grows in Nepal, Thailand, and India. Some white teas have less caffeine than green tea.
