It grows best in warm and wet places. It has long leaves and bright parts under the ground. We call these underground parts rhizomes.

People use the rhizomes in many ways. They can use them fresh or dry them. When dried, they are ground into a yellow powder. This powder is a spice used in many Asian meals. It has a warm and bitter taste. It also has a smell like mustard.

The bright yellow color comes from a part called curcumin. This is a bright yellow chemical made by the plant.

Turmeric has a long history. People have used it as a dye for a long time. In India, it colors the robes of monks. In some places, people use it for body paint. It is also used in special wedding ceremonies.

Turmeric can even help scientists. It can act as a pH indicator. This means it changes color to show if a liquid is acidic or alkaline. It stays yellow in acid but turns red in alkaline liquids.
