It is a perennial plant, which means it lives for many years. This plant is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. To grow well, it needs warm temperatures and lots of rain. Most people use the rhizomes, which are the thick underground stems. These parts are yellow or orange and have a strong smell.

The plant is very important for food, color, and even medicine.

Growing and using turmeric involves a few special steps. First, people gather the rhizomes from the ground each year. Some are saved to grow more plants in the next season. Other rhizomes are used for eating or making dye. Many people boil the rhizomes in water before they dry them. Once they are dry, the parts are ground into a fine powder. This powder is a deep orange-yellow color. It has a warm and bitter flavor like black pepper.

People have used turmeric for many centuries in many different ways. It is a major part of traditional medicines like Ayurveda and Siddha. In India, it spread along with Hinduism and Buddhism. Monks and priests use the yellow dye to color their robes. In Southeast Asia, people used it for food and body painting. It was also used in many special religious rituals.

In the past, some people in Europe even called it "Indian saffron."

There are many interesting facts about the science of turmeric. The bright yellow color comes from a chemical called curcumin. This curcumin makes up about 1% to 6% of the powder. The World Health Organization and the FDA approve it as a food additive. Turmeric powder also contains many other things like protein and fat. It contains about 34 different essential oils.

Some parts of the plant, like the leaves, can also be used for cooking. In some places, the leaves help make special sweet dishes.

Turmeric connects to many things you might see in your own kitchen. You might find it in a yellow curry powder. It is used to color many foods like rice, juice, and even ice cream. In some cultures, people drink a warm drink called a golden latte. This is made by adding turmeric to warm milk. Scientists also use turmeric in a special way in labs. They use turmeric paper as a pH indicator. This paper turns red if a liquid is alkaline. It stays yellow if the liquid is acidic.
