Yellow tea

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Yellow tea is a special drink made from leaves.

It is found in China and Korea. In China, it is called huángchá. This tea is rare and can be expensive. People make it in a way similar to green tea. But they add one extra step. This step is called sweltering. It means to wrap the leaves to let them change. This step gives the leaves a light yellow color. It also helps remove the grassy smell of green tea. One famous type is Junshan Yinzhen. It comes from Hunan Province. Another kind is Huoshan Huangya from Mt. Huo.

In Korea, people call it hwangcha. They make it in a different way. Some make it like oolong tea. Others make it like black tea. The tea stays lightly oxidized. This means the leaves change just a little bit. This process leaves the tea liquid a bright yellow color. It is a lovely tea to see and taste.
