These leaves come from a small tree called Camellia sinensis. To make black tea, the leaves go through a step called oxidation. This is when the leaves react with air. This process changes the color and the flavor. In many East Asian languages, people call it "red tea." This is because the leaves turn red during the work.

There are many ways to make the tea. Some people use the orthodox way. This can be done by hand to make high quality tea. Others use a machine called CTC. This stands for "crush, tear, curl." This method makes small bits of tea for tea bags. The tea is then sorted by size. Whole leaves are the best quality. Small bits like fannings and dust are used in bags.
