Videotelephony is a way to see and hear people at the same time.

You might know this as a video call or video conferencing. Some advanced versions use telepresence. This technology tries to make it feel like everyone is in one room.

It is a very useful tool for many people. It helps doctors talk to patients through telemedicine. It also helps teachers reach students through distance education.

People who use sign language can also use it to communicate.

This technology works by sending audio and video signals across distances. Early systems used two closed-circuit television systems. These were often connected by a coax cable or radio.

In the past, video was hard to send over the internet. This is because uncompressed video needs a lot of bandwidth. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can move through a connection. To fix this, scientists used video compression. This is a way to make video files smaller so they can travel easily.

New tools like better CPUs and high-speed internet make this work today.

People have been dreaming of this since the late 1800s. In April 1930, reporters saw the first public demo in New York City.

This event linked AT&T headquarters on Broadway to a building on West Street. Later, a scientist named Gregorio Y. Zara invented a videophone in 1954.

He is called the Father of Videoconferencing for his work. In 1970, AT&T released the Picturephone.

However, the Picturephone did not sell well. It was very expensive and not many people had it.

Many big changes happened as technology grew. In 1984, a company called Concept Communication made a board for computers. This made video much smoother and cheaper.

In 1992, a program called CU-SeeMe was made at Cornell University. By the late 1990s, Kyocera released the VP-210. This was the first mobile color videophone.

It could even take still photos. In 2005, Lifesize showed the first high definition systems.

These systems had much clearer pictures.

Today, videotelephony is part of our daily lives. We use it on smartphones and computers almost anywhere.

You can even use it from the top of Mount Everest! In 2013, Daniel Hughes made a call from that high mountain.

We also use it for big events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people used apps like Zoom to stay connected.

Using video for a long time can sometimes cause "Zoom fatigue." This is a feeling of being very tired after many calls. Even so, video helps us stay close to the world.
