It can record video or stream it over a network. You might see them used for video calls or live streaming. Some webcams are small tools you plug in with a USB cord. Other webcams are built right into the hardware of a laptop. They help us connect with people through our computer screens.

How a webcam works is a very interesting thing that happens. First, light enters through a lens to reach an image sensor.

This sensor can be a CMOS or a CCD type. The sensor turns that light into digital data. Most webcams use a small chip to compress this video. This makes the huge amount of data easier to send. Then, a controller sends the video to your computer through a USB path.

Webcams have a long and surprising history. In 1991, a camera was used to watch a coffee pot.

This happened at the University of Cambridge in England. The first widespread commercial webcam arrived in 1994. A company called Connectix made the QuickCam.

It cost about $100 for an Apple Macintosh user. Designer Jon Garber almost named it the "Mac-camera."

There are many important facts about these devices. The SGI Indy was the first commercial computer with a standard video camera.

In 1996, the IBM RS/6000 860 laptop became a famous model with a built-in camera. This laptop cost around $12,000 back then. In 2002, Yahoo Messenger added support for video calls. By 2012, you could even buy a 3D webcam for less than $100. These cameras used special glasses to show 3D images.

Today, webcams link to many things you already know. You might use one to watch a bald eagle nest.

Some people use them for security to watch buildings. During the 2020 pandemic, many people needed them for school. This caused a shortage of webcams in stores. Many people even used their smartphones as a backup camera. Now, webcams are a normal part of our digital lives.
