A webcam is a specialized video camera designed to record or stream data to a computer or a network.

These devices serve many modern purposes, such as video telephony, live streaming, and social media. They are also used for security surveillance and wildlife observation. A webcam can be a peripheral device that you plug in externally. Alternatively, it can be built-in hardware, which is common in most modern laptops. Most webcams connect to a computer using a USB interface or a wireless protocol.

The process of capturing an image involves several technical steps. First, light passes through an optical lens into the camera.

This lens can be a plastic lens that moves for manual focusing, or a fixed-focus lens. Inside the camera, an image sensor captures the light.

These sensors are typically either CMOS or CCD types. The sensor converts light into digital data. Because digital video streams contain huge amounts of data, many webcams include an ASIC, which is a specialized chip. This chip performs real-time video compression to make the data easier to transmit and store. Finally, a controller translates the video over a USB path to the host computer.

Webcams vary significantly in their technical specifications and capabilities. Resolution refers to the detail in the image, and it has increased steadily over time. Early models provided low resolutions like 320x240 pixels. Modern mid-range webcams often offer 1080p resolution, while high-end models can reach 4K at 60 frames per second. Another important feature is the field of view, or FOV. This describes how much of a scene the camera can see. Some users prefer a narrow FOV of less than 90 degrees for home offices. Other cameras offer a wide FOV of up to 360 degrees to capture an entire room.

The history of the webcam began with a very specific purpose. In 1991, researchers at the University of Cambridge Computer Science Department developed a camera to monitor a coffee pot.

This setup, known as the Trojan Room coffee pot, operated over a local network. The first widespread commercial webcam, the QuickCam, arrived in 1994.

It was created by the company Connectix and cost $100 for Apple Macintosh users. The designer, Jon Garber, originally wanted to name the device the "Mac-camera." In 1993, the SGI Indy became the first commercial computer to feature a standard video camera.

Technological milestones show how webcams moved from niche tools to mainstream necessities. In 1996, the IBM RS/6000 860 laptop was released as one of the first widely known laptops with an integrated webcam. This device was quite expensive, with prices starting at US$ 12,000. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, instant messaging clients began adding webcam support. For example, Yahoo Messenger version 5.5 added video calling in 2002. MSN Messenger gained this capability in 2003. In 2012, consumers could even purchase a 3D space webcam for less than US$100. These devices produced 3D anaglyph images at a resolution of up to 1280x480 pixels.

Recent years have highlighted the importance of webcam reliability and availability. During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, a global shortage of external webcams occurred. This happened because many people began working from home or attending school remotely. Many built-in laptop cameras were found to be inadequate for professional use. Most laptops at that time capped at 720p recording quality. In contrast, smartphones often provided 1080p or 4K quality. A design challenge exists for laptop manufacturers because laptops are often too thin. It is difficult to fit a standard 7mm camera module inside, so many use smaller 2.5mm modules instead.

Today, webcams connect us to a wide variety of digital experiences. We use them for videotelephony to speak with friends through programs like Apple's Messages.

They also allow for virtual tourism and the observation of nature. For instance, webcams can provide live views of a bald eagle nest.

They are also used for security surveillance to monitor public squares or bridges. As broadband internet speeds and USB interfaces continue to improve, webcam technology continues to evolve alongside them.
