Photogrammetry is a fascinating science used to learn about our world.

It works by recording and measuring photographic images of physical objects. Scientists use these patterns to find reliable information about the environment. This technology helps us understand shapes and sizes very accurately. It can turn flat, two-dimensional pictures into detailed 3D digital models. This makes it a very important tool for many different jobs.

How does this science actually work? One method is called stereophotogrammetry, which uses two or more photos.

These pictures must be taken from different positions. Scientists find common points that appear in every single image. They then draw a line of sight, or a ray, from the camera to the object. Where these rays meet is called triangulation. This is the exact spot where the 3D location is found. It is a clever way to find depth using only light.

People have been working on this for a long time. The invention of this method is credited to Aimé Laussedat. Later, a German architect named Albrecht Meydenbauer created the name. He used the term "photogrammetry" in an article from 1867.

Since then, the tools have changed a lot. Early workers used stereoplotters to draw contour lines on maps. Today, we use computers and even drones to do the work. This helps us see things that were once very hard to measure.

There are many amazing ways to use these tools today. In movies, it helps blend real actors with computer images.

Video game makers use it to build realistic worlds. Archaeologists use it to map old sites or even museum masks. It can even help meteorologists measure wind speeds in tornadoes. Engineers use it to check things deep under the sea. They might look at wind turbine bases or underwater cables. It is a tool that touches almost every part of science.

You might have even seen photogrammetry in your own life. Google Earth uses it to create its 3D views of the world.

It is also used to study changing places like glaciers. On Mount Stanley, drones showed a glacier shrank by 29.5% recently. This happened between the years 2020 and 2024. It shows how we can use pictures to watch our planet change. This science turns simple snapshots into powerful tools for discovery.
