History began for Tula a very long time ago. It was first mentioned in a book in the year 1146. In the Middle Ages, it was a small fortress. Later, a brick citadel called a kremlin was built. Between 1514 and 1521, workers built these strong walls. In 1607, a man named Ivan Bolotnikov seized the citadel. His group held out against the Tsar's army for four months.

In 1712, Peter the Great visited the city. He asked the Demidov family to build a factory. This was the first armament factory in all of Russia. The Demidovs helped make Tula a great center for iron. They even opened a museum for weapons in 1724. During World War II, the city was very important again. It helped protect the area near Moscow from German forces. In 1976, Tula was given the title Hero City.

Visitors find many interesting things to see in Tula. You can visit the Tula Kremlin or the State Museum of Weapons. The writer Leo Tolstoy lived nearby at Yasnaya Polyana. He wrote famous books like War and Peace there. If you want a snack, try Tula pryanik. These are honey cookies with spices made since the 1600s. People get around the city using trams, buses, and trolleybuses.
