People use shotguns to hit flying targets in the air. This sport is very popular in the United States, Canada, and Europe. There are many different ways to play the game. For example, American Trap is very common in North America. Olympic trap is another version used in international games. Some people also enjoy skeet shooting or sporting clays.

Each style has its own special rules and machines.

To play, a shooter stands at a line and waits for a target.

A machine called a trap launches a clay disk into the sky. In American trap, one machine sits in a house downrange. In Olympic trap, fifteen machines sit in a deep trench called a bunker. The targets fly away from the shooter at different angles. Some shooters face single targets, while others face double targets. This means two disks are launched at the same time. A person or a computer triggers the machine to throw the target.

This sport has a long and interesting history.

In the late 18th century, people used real birds for practice. They used birds like the passenger pigeon, which lived in huge numbers then. Later, people used glass balls as targets. Famous shooters like Annie Oakley used these glass targets. Around 1880, people began using clay targets instead. A man named Fred Kimble helped make these targets easier to break. The first automatic machines arrived in 1909 to help launch the targets.

Shooters use special equipment to stay safe and perform well.

Most people use a 12-gauge shotgun for the sport. These guns often have long barrels and two barrels. They are built to handle hundreds of shots in one day. Shooters also wear ear protection like earmuffs or ear plugs. This is important because the guns are very loud. They also wear special shooting glasses to protect their eyes. These glasses often have colored lenses to help them see the targets better.

Understanding trap shooting is easier if you know about ammunition.

Each shotgun cartridge is called a shell or a hull. Inside the shell, there is gunpowder and many small metal pellets. These tiny pellets are called shot. When the gun fires, the shot flies toward the target. In the Olympics, men shoot 125 targets and women shoot 75. The sport combines skill, focus, and fast movements. It is a way for people to test their aim against a moving target.
