Shooting sports are activities that focus on accuracy, precision, and speed.

People use many different tools to compete in these sports. Some use handguns, which are small and held in one hand. Others use rifles, which are long guns held against the shoulder. Shotguns are also used, and they often fire many tiny pellets at once. You can even use bows and crossbows to participate. These sports can be done by individuals or in teams. In team events, the scores of all members are added together. Because the tools used can be loud and powerful, people practice at special ranges. These areas are usually far away from where people live.

There are different ways to play these games. One way is called bullseye shooting. In this style, the goal is to hit a round target. You try to hit the center, which is called the bullseye.

This requires great focus on your breath and how you pull the trigger. Competitors might shoot from distances like 10, 25, or 50 meters. Another style involves hitting moving targets. This can be done with shotguns using clay targets.

These targets are often shaped like small discs. This way of shooting is very different from the slow precision of bullseye shooting.

Shooting has a very long history in many places. In colonial America, people practiced shooting for fun or training. Some settlers even held turkey shoots after the harvest. In these matches, people could win a turkey by hitting a target. In the 1720s, German gunsmiths in Pennsylvania made flintlock rifles. These were very accurate at distances up to 200 yards. Later, around 1820, a new system called percussion caps became popular. This system made the tools more reliable in the rain. It also made the "lock time" much faster. This means the tool fires more quickly after you pull the trigger.

Many famous groups were formed to help people practice shooting. In 1859, the National Rifle Association was founded in Great Britain. In 1871, the National Rifle Association of America was formed in the United States.

This group wanted to promote shooting in a scientific way. They even bought land on Long Island called Creedmoor for a range. Today, many young people participate in shooting through groups like the Boy Scouts. More than one million youth take part in these programs. This shows how much the sport has grown over many years.

Shooting has been a part of the Olympic Games since 1896.

The founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin, even competed in these events. Over time, the targets have changed to be more kind to animals. Instead of using live birds, people now use glass or clay targets. The Olympics now feature many events for men, women, and mixed pairs. This ensures that everyone has a fair chance to win medals. There are many different types of events for rifles, pistols, and shotguns. It remains a major way for athletes to show their incredible skill.
