Shooting sports are competitive and recreational activities centered on accuracy, precision, and speed.

These sports involve the use of ranged weapons to hit specific targets. Most participants use firearms or airguns, such as handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Some people also use bows or crossbows to compete. Because the projectiles used in these sports carry high impact energy and create loud noises, they are considered potentially lethal. Therefore, shooting sports are typically held at permanent shooting ranges or temporary fields. These locations are carefully chosen to be away from human settlements to ensure safety.

To understand how these sports work, one must look at the equipment used. Handguns are small arms designed to be shot off-hand without a shoulder stock. They include two main subtypes: pistols and revolvers. While handguns are convenient to carry, they usually have a shorter effective range than long guns. Rifles are long guns featuring a rifled barrel. A shooter uses both hands to hold the rifle and braces it against the shoulder using a stock. This provides the stability needed for high accuracy over long distances. Shotguns are also long guns, but they are often smoothbore and use a larger caliber. A shotgun might fire a single large projectile called a slug or a shell containing many small pellets known as shot.

Shooting disciplines are often categorized by the type of equipment and the goal of the match. One major category is bullseye shooting. In this discipline, the objective is to hit a round target as close to the center as possible. This center point is called the bullseye. Competitors focus on precision through breath control, sight picture, and trigger control. These matches usually have fixed, relatively long time limits to allow for intense concentration. Other disciplines involve hitting moving targets. For example, many shotgun events involve shooting at clay pigeons.

History shows how technology has changed the way people practice marksmanship. In the 1720s, German gunsmiths in Pennsylvania manufactured flintlock rifles. These were popular because they could be accurate up to 200 yards. Around 1820, a new ignition system called percussion caps became available. This changed the "lock time," which is the time between the firing mechanism starting and the propellant igniting. A shorter lock time means the firearm moves less after the trigger is pressed. This allows for smaller shot groups on a target. Faster lock time also made it possible to hit fast-moving aerial targets with a cloud of tiny lead pellets.

As shooting evolved, so did the organizations that managed it. In Great Britain, the National Rifle Association was founded in 1859. In the United States, the National Rifle Association of America was formed in 1871. Veteran officers Col. William C. Church and Gen. George Wingate created it to promote shooting on a "scientific" basis. The organization eventually moved its National Matches to a large location called Camp Perry. In 1903, the U.S. Congress also created the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice. This group, now known as the Civilian Marksmanship Program, also participates in the National Matches at Camp Perry.

Shooting has a deep connection to the Olympic Games. It has been part of the program since the first modern Olympics in 1896. Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was himself a French pistol champion.

Over time, the sport has adapted to modern social standards. For example, targets used to resemble humans or animals. Today, targets are circular to avoid any association with violence. In the 2004 Olympics, athletes competed for 51 medals across 10 men's and 7 women's events. The Olympics also introduced Mixed Pairs events to ensure gender equity between men and women.

Today, shooting sports involve massive numbers of people globally. In the United States, more than one million youth participate in shooting sports through various programs. These include the Boy Scouts of America, 4-H, and the National Guard Bureau. The sport is governed internationally by the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF). Within individual countries, National Governing Bodies (NGBs) administer the specific rules and competitions. Whether through the precision of a 10-meter air pistol or the speed of a shotgun skeet event, shooting remains a highly skilled athletic pursuit.
