People use these buildings for prayer and other holy rituals. Many followers believe a temple acts as a house for a god or many gods.

While many religions use the word "temple," others have different names. For example, Muslims use mosques and Jews use synagogues. Even though the names change, these buildings serve a similar purpose for the people who visit them.

How a temple works depends on the faith. In many traditions, a special group of clergy maintains the building.

Sometimes, only these clergy members can enter the most sacred parts of the building. In Hindu temples, there is a small inner room called a garbhagriha. This room holds a murti, which is a holy image of a deity.

Other parts of the temple might include large halls for people to gather. Some temples even have large areas around them that contain many other buildings.

The history of temples goes back a very long time. The word itself comes from Ancient Rome. It described a sacred area marked out by a priest.

In ancient Egypt, temples were seen as mansions for gods. They were used to help keep the order of nature. In Mesopotamia, people built ziggurats made of sun-baked bricks.

These structures were shaped like terraced step pyramids with a flat top.

Different cultures have built amazing temples with unique details. Greek and Roman temples were often made of stone and marble.

These buildings often have a kitchen called a langar to serve free food. Buddhist temples can include stupas, which are dome-shaped structures.

Some stupas were built to hold sacred relics.

Temples connect people to their history and their beliefs. For example, Hindu temples can be found all over the world today.

They are built in many styles, like the Dravidian style in the south. Jain temples, called derasars, also look very different depending on the region.

Some Jain temples even have a special pillar called a manastambha in front. Whether they are made of wood, brick, or stone, temples remain important centers for many communities.
