A pilgrimage is a journey to a holy place.

The person making this trip is called a pilgrim. This word comes from the Latin word "peregrinus," which means someone who has come from far away. Most pilgrims travel to a site that is very important to their religious beliefs. They might visit a place where a founder or a saint was born or died. Some people go to locations where they believe miracles happened. These sites often have temples or shrines built to honor them.

There are many ways these journeys work. Many pilgrims choose to walk on foot to reach their goal. This physical movement can be part of their spiritual search. Some people travel to find healing or to get answers to questions. A pilgrimage can even be a metaphorical journey into a person's own beliefs. For some, the journey is about leaving the safety of home to trust in a higher power. This can lead to a personal change before the pilgrim returns to daily life.

People have been making these journeys for a very long time. In ancient Greece, people visited oracles at places like Delphi. In ancient Egypt and Persia, pilgrimage was also a common practice. Early Hebrew pilgrims traveled to places like Shiloh, Dan, and Jerusalem. In the Middle Ages, Christian pilgrimages became a large part of the economy. These trips often involved organized groups traveling through the Mediterranean region. Even the way people travel has changed over time. In the 19th century, improvements in infrastructure meant people could use trains for their journeys.

Different faiths have specific places they hold sacred. For Buddhists, important sites include Lumbini in Nepal, where the Buddha was born. They also visit Bodh Gaya in India, which is where he reached enlightenment.

In the Abrahamic religions, the Holy Land is a major focal point. A 2011 study from Stockholm University found that pilgrims visit to connect personally with their faith. The Bahá'í Faith includes visits to holy places in Israel, such as Haifa and Acre. In Islam, the concept of "hajj" refers to a special procession.

These journeys connect people to their history and their community. For example, some Christian groups used "pilgrims" to describe traveling speakers. In 1894, these speakers visited local congregations to help them grow in knowledge. In Switzerland, these travelers helped bring people closer to their organization. Pilgrimage can also be a way to collect new ideas. In the pre-Inca culture of Chavín, people gathered at Chavín de Huántar for rituals.
