Uppalavanna was a very important Buddhist nun.

She was known as one of the Buddha's top female followers. Her name means the color of a blue water lily. This name came from her skin, which had a bluish color. In Buddhist tradition, the Buddha always has chief disciples. For the Buddha named Gautama, these included the nuns Khema and Uppalavanna.

They were the female counterparts to the male disciples Sariputta and Maha Moggallana.

Stories about her early life are quite different. One tradition says she was a wealthy merchant's daughter from Savatthi. Many powerful men wanted to marry her because she was very beautiful. To avoid these suitors, she chose to become a nun. Another tradition says she had a much harder life. It says she lived as a wife and a courtesan before finding Buddhism. Regardless of the story, she eventually became a bhikkhuni, which is a Buddhist nun.

Uppalavanna reached enlightenment very fast. It happened less than two weeks after she joined the nuns. One night, she was cleaning an observance hall. She lit a lamp to see her work. She used the fire from that lamp as a kasina. A kasina is an object used for meditation. By focusing on the fire, she reached a deep state of concentration. This helped her become a fully enlightened arahant that same night.

After she reached enlightenment, she gained great spiritual powers. These are called iddhipada. The Buddha called her the foremost nun in these psychic powers.

She once performed a huge miracle at a place called Sankassa. She transformed herself into a cakkavatti, or a universal monarch. She created a large group of people to honor the Buddha. She also used her calm mind to face a spirit named Mara. Mara tried to scare her, but she was not afraid.

We can learn many things from her history. Some scholars notice that she and Maha Moggallana were both dark-skinned. Their partners, Khema and Sariputta, were light-skinned. This might show that the Buddha's teachings are for everyone.

Even though many details are missing, her story stays important. We find her mentioned in many old texts like the Pali Canon. We even see her in stone carvings from the 3rd century BCE.
