It sits right on the banks of the Penna River. The city is part of the Nellore district, which it also helps lead. It is the fourth most crowded city in its state. You can find it near the Bay of Bengal. This closeness to the sea brings a nice breeze. The breeze helps keep the air from getting too extreme. It makes the weather more moderate in both summer and winter.

The weather in Nellore follows a tropical pattern. The summers in April and May are very hot. These hot days usually last until the end of June. Most of the rain arrives from October to December. This is when the north-east monsoon brings most of the yearly rain. About 60 percent of the rain happens during these months. Sometimes, big storms called cyclones can cause floods in the area. The city can also face dry times called droughts.

There are many stories about how the city got its name. One story links it to a sacred stone found under a nelli tree. Another idea is that the name comes from the Tamil word "nellu." This word means paddy or rice. The area is famous for growing huge amounts of rice. Because of all the rice fields, the name changed over time. In the past, the area was known as Vikrama Simhapuri. Today, rice farming is still a very important part of the economy.

Nellore has a very long and interesting history. Many different groups have ruled this land over the centuries. The Mauryas ruled it in the 3rd century BCE. Later, the Chola rulers held the area for a long time. The city also saw rule from the Vijayanagara Empire and the Mughals. In the 1700s, the Marathas captured the city from Nazibulla. Later, the British took control as part of the Madras Presidency. The city played a big role in the formation of Andhra Pradesh. A man named Potti Sriramulu was from this city. He fasted until death to help create the state.

Life in the city is full of color and movement.
