It is the fourth largest city in the state and serves as a headquarters for its district. The city sits near other places like Suryapet and Warangal. It is also located north of Amaravathi, which is the capital of Andhra Pradesh. On the western side of the city, the Munneru River flows by.

This river is a tributary, or a smaller part, of the much larger Krishna River.

The weather in Khammam changes with the seasons. The summer lasts from March until the end of May. During this time, it can get very hot with temperatures reaching 48 °C. The monsoon season brings rain from June to September. This rain comes from the South West Monsoon and helps cool the air.

Sometimes, heavy rains can cause the Munneru River to flood the area. In the winter, which is from December to February, the weather is much cooler. January is usually the coldest month of the year.

Khammam has a history that goes back nearly 1,000 years. The city has had many different names over time. Some old records call it Stambhadri or Kambamettu. The name Khammam likely comes from a pillar at a local temple. This is the Narasimhaswamy temple, which is a special place for pilgrims.
