It serves as the headquarters for the Khammam district and the Khammam mandal. As the fourth largest city in Telangana, it holds a major administrative role. The city is situated east of the state capital, Hyderabad, near Suryapet and Warangal. It also lies north of Amaravathi, the capital of Andhra Pradesh. The Munneru River flows along the western side of the city.

This river is a tributary, which means it is a smaller stream that flows into a larger river, the Krishna River.

The city's name has many historical variations. Records show names like Stambhadri, Kambamettu, and Khammammettu. The name Khammam likely refers to a pillar. This connects to the Narasimhaswamy temple, a major pilgrimage site. The city was once known as Sthambadri because of this temple.

Historical documents from the 1800s show different spellings like "Kamma Mettu." These variations often occurred during the process of anglicization, which is when English speakers change the spelling of local names. Some records even list the name as "Commum Met."

Khammam has a history spanning nearly 1,000 years. In 950 AD, the Kakatiya Dynasty constructed the Khammam Fort. This fort sits on a hill overlooking the city. The city has also been a center for political activity. During the Indian freedom struggle, many leaders emerged from this area. These included Communist leaders and various Congress leaders. Notably, Mahatma Gandhi visited the town, then called Khammam mett, on August 5, 1946. The town grew from 9,000 people in 1901 to 100,000 by 1981.

The geography and climate of Khammam are defined by distinct seasons. The city sits at an average elevation of 108 metres. The summer season lasts from March to June. During this time, temperatures can reach between 40 °C and 48 °C. The monsoon season arrives from June to September, bringing rain from the South West Monsoon. This rain provides relief from the intense summer heat.

However, heavy rains can cause the Munneru River to flood. Significant floods occurred in 2007 and 2009. The winter season runs from December to February, with January being the coldest month. During January, temperatures typically range from 28 °C to 34 °C.

Demographics show a large and diverse population. According to the 2011 census, the total population was 313,504. This included 250,182 urban residents and 63,322 rural residents. The sex ratio was 1,017 females for every 1,000 males. The literacy rate in Khammam is 79.40%. This is significantly higher than the state average of 67.41%. In 2012, the civic body was upgraded to a municipal corporation.

Khammam is a vital transport and economic hub for the region. It is connected by National Highways like 365BB and 563. The city provides an alternative route from Hyderabad to the Godavari districts. This helps drivers bypass the busy Vijayawada-Eluru route. Travelers can also use the railway station to reach major cities.

The economy is expanding through new industries. In 2023, Godrej Agrovet began work on an Integrated Palm Oil complex. This project involves an investment of nearly Rs 300 crore.

Technology and modern infrastructure are also growing in the city. A major IT Hub was inaugurated to provide jobs for local youth.
