The geography of the region is defined by the Deccan Plateau. Warangal sits on the eastern part of this plateau. The landscape consists of granite rocks and various hill formations. This rocky terrain makes the land quite barren. Because of this, the area depends on seasonal rainfall for farming. There are no major rivers flowing directly through the city. Instead, the city relies on the Kakatiya Canal for its water. This canal originates from the Sriram Sagar Project. The climate is predominantly hot and dry, which is typical of a semi-arid region.

Warangal has a deep history as an ancient capital. It was the seat of power for the Kakatiya dynasty. This dynasty was established in 1163. During the 160 years of Kakatiya rule, the city had several names. These included Orugallu, Ekashila Nagaram, and Omatikonda. All these names mean "single stone." This refers to a massive granite boulder located within the Warangal fort.

The dynasty saw many rulers, including Rani Rudrama Devi. She was the only woman to rule over the Telugu region. After the Kakatiyas, the city changed hands many times. It was ruled by the Delhi Sultanate, the Musunuri Nayaks, the Bahmani Sultanate, and the Golconda Sultanate. Later, it became part of the Mughal empire. Eventually, it became part of the state of Telangana in 2014.

The Kakatiya period left behind many significant monuments. These structures have turned the city into a popular tourist destination. Notable examples include fortresses, lakes, and temples. The Kakatiyas built four massive stone gateways. One of these is the Kakatiya Kala Thoranam. This monument is so important that it is included in the official emblem of Telangana. Other important sites include the Swayambhu temple and the Ramappa temple. The Ramappa temple is located near the Ramappa Lake. The cultural and administrative importance of this era was even noted by the traveler Marco Polo.

Today, Warangal is a center for many different economic activities. Agriculture remains a primary economic driver for the region. Farmers grow crops such as paddy, cotton, mango, and wheat. The city is home to the Enumamula market. This is the second-largest grain market in Asia. The city is also seeing growth in the Information Technology sector. New development centers for companies like Tech Mahindra and Cyient have opened there.

This recognition is for its efforts to make lifelong learning available to everyone. The city is part of the Smart Cities Mission. This allows for extra investment to improve industrial opportunities and urban infrastructure. It is also part of the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana. This scheme helps protect the city's historical importance. The city features many educational institutions, such as the National Institute of Technology.

Transportation in Warangal is well-established through several modes. The city is linked to major towns by National Highway 163 and State Highway 3. The railway system is very important for the region. Warangal has two main stations: Kazipet and Warangal. These stations sit on the New Delhi-Chennai main line. Kazipet Junction is a major hub with large locomotive sheds. The city also has the Mamnoor Airport. This airport was originally built by the Nizams in 1930. While it currently serves as an NCC Training Centre, there are plans to develop it further. Recent proposals include extending the runway to accommodate larger aircraft like the Boeing 747.
